I was previewing Lesson 4 for my 4 and half year old. The word "come" showed up in this lesson. How should I teach her that it the letter "o" should sound as "u" in "umbrella" rather than the long "o" sound in "octopus". I read the instructions in the book, but it doesn't seem this is mentioned. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just told my kids that some words just don't follow the rules and the reminded them when it came up "their's that tricky word again." there were a few things that are a little different and I explained them that way. If you remind them a couple of times and make it seem like a game to remember which words don't follow the rules it makes it fun. eventually they sound out words and even when they use the wrong vowel sound to begin with they can figure it out.
