I read to my eldest every night for half an hour or so.
Recently he has taken the book and wanted to read to me. He's also asked me "Daddy, teach me to read"
Is he too young to teach? Is he asking me just 'cos he sees me doing it to him?

3 is definitely not too young if your child is showing interest. My son started at about 3 and 3 months and in just over 6 months has only a few pages to go in the Reading Lesson. He now reads a book to us every night (we still read to him, too.).

Hi, I'm new to this forum so not too sure of the rules. I taught my son to read at 3 years old because he started to memorize his books. I asked my mum who was a teacher, then Head-teacher, then OfSted inspector, then taught head-teachers to be head-teachers to devise a programme for me. She did and I used that.
I don't want to blatantly advertise but if you are interested I can send you my website address to have a look (not sure how you send private emails).
The most important things I have learnt using our toolkits is to stick to books which have clear font (lots of white space so that the words stand out - ensure all letter shapes are the same for a, k etc), repetitive words (helps build on knowledge), limited punctuation (avoids confusion as in the first instance children find it difficult to recognise capitals and full-stops) and themes which children relate to.
Use a variety of ways i.e. teach the words through playing games i.e. bingo, pairs, lotto etc. Lastly, always stop before they get bored otherwise they will begin to dislike it.
Hope this helps. Teaching my son to read has help in many ways - he is calmer, more focused and enjoys books

Is he asking me just 'cos he sees me doing it to him? It seems your son is smart at reading! My daughter has been learning reading from beestar. It offers weekly worksheets with cute pictures and interesting stories. DD loves it! ;DYou can have a try~~ Lisa
