Barbara, Presently, there is only one, ADHD according to DSM-IV - Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. ADD that stands for Attention-deficit Disorder from the old classification was described with or without "H" (hyperactivity).
Under present classification the any attention-deficit disorder diagnosis has an "H" in its name, regardless whether a child is hyperactive or not, but also comes with qualifiers: Combined Type, Predominantly Inattentive Type , or Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type.
Nevertheless, many parents and professionals use the old term ADD to describe a child who is inattentive but not necessarily overactive and reserve the ADHD name for hyperactive kids.
